Today's harvest

Here's a sampling of what we harvested a couple of hours ago. Just ate some tomatoes and cukes -- so sweet and delicious! I wait all year for tomatoes this good.

Looks good. If you love tomatoes that much you should maybe try growing them indoors all year round.

I might give that a try, although I really don't want to use grow lights, etc. Not enough sun here in the winter for greenhouse growing. I'm starting to plan my winter garden now, which will be outdoors in cloches/cold frames. I'll be planting garlic, spinach, and lettuce in the next couple of weeks.

Be careful with those grow lights. The gubmint might think your growing something else.

Yeah, but wouldn't it be really funny for them to raid your house to find that you were growing... tomatoes! :D

Nice harvest!
I see what look like yellow pear tomatoes in the basket. What's the red cherry tomato?
And what's the larger tomato? (I have a thing for tomatoes.)
The beans look delicious. Blue Lake is my favorite; even the bush Blue Lake has a good, almost "pole bean" bean flavor.
Is everything in your garden from open-pollinated seed?

Not sure really what we have this year in terms of tomato varieties, as my wife planted most of it from nursery starts, whereas I usually do mine from seed. We have about 4 varieties of slicers, a red cherry, and the yellow pear. I don't know whether they are open-pollinated or not. Next year, I will probably do the planting (my wife does what I call "Chaos Gardening" :D), and I'll do a mix of indeterminates, both slicers and sauce tomatoes, and a cherry and yellow pear. I buy seed mostly from Territorial Seed Company.

I prefer pole beans, exactly because of the superior flavor. Might try some more exotic varieties next season.

Heh, it makes it damn hard to weed and harvest! She just kinda planted things in random places all over the space (we have a spot in a community garden). No rows and paths to speak of; she's kinda A.D.D.!

Having to drive somewhere to get to the garden is not something I'm used to, and as I work 40-50 hours a week, my input has been small. The soil here at our new house is very clay-ey; I will be spending fall-spring building up the space and soil here so I can walk out my back door and garden, the way it should be!

Looking at that stuff makes me feel like one of the rhinos from Ice Age, then I slam my store bought stuff in my face and it has the taste of a pine cone, our first year of gardening didn't go as well as we would have liked but we learned a tremendous amount.
